Walnuts, Chestnuts, Pistachios, were all relatively easy to shell compared to say. Macadamias, however, I couldn't remember ever seeing what their shells looked like, so figured that must be the answer. The name was in honor of John Macadam, a Scottish-Australian chemist, politician, and medical teacher. It was the German-Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller who gave the genus the name Macadamia way back in 1857. Unlike opening a peanut or a pistachio, it takes some serious muscle to extract the edible nut from its shell: 300 pounds of pressure per square inch to be exact, making it the hardest nut in the world to crack! Macadamia nuts are the fruits of the macadamia tree, which is native to Australia. While some prefer their macadamia nuts seasoned only with a touch of salt, macadamias are available in a wide array of fun and unusual seasonings. Now they are so expensive!! Texas produces some 60 million pounds of pecans a year. The rumors seem to have been driven by the Italian-sounding names of two of the owners: Jasper Sanfilippo, of the Chicago-based John B. I've been dating Jenny for over a year, and I still think she's a tough nut to crack!
